Kath and I met in 2010 when she put together an amazing installation of an escape rope hanging down the facade of an old police station – Gaffa Gallery. Last year she was a Bundanon Artist-in-Residence.
I encountered further large scale works of Kath’s in 2011 when she was working in Newcastle’s Lock Up Museum. When I visited the exhibition of Situational, I was expecting a large scale installation.
Kath managed to surprise me again with a series of small scale works along with photographs and a video, documented time and how time moved. However, difference in scale did not take away the beautiful sensuality that Kath has for the universe, particularly Worlds Within.
Some works, like Insinuate, take after her previous works. I particularly enjoy Spring Scramble and recalled her previous blog post about a kangaroo passing through a fence leaving hair on the fencing wire. I can not help to think, as the Earth move and we spin with it, little things we shredded: hair, finger nails and etc, did they marks of our existence?
Please enjoy Kath’s exhibition, on view now until 17 March 2013. Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Pidcock Street, Camperdown. http://www.kathfries.com
Please also note, The John Fries Memorial Prize 2013 is now open for emerging artists, this is a kind donation by the Fries family in memory of former Viscopy director and honorary treasurer, Kath’s father, John Fries. please visit www.viscopy.org.au for detail.
