Catalogue Essay

All forms of life experience the cycle from beginning to end, birth and death. But what happens after or between such cycles remains an unknown.  Assuming cycles revolve and the energy or spirit is carried from one form to another there remains an area which neither Science or religion can inform us.

Some spiritualities believe in multiple reincarnations.  Science also informs us through the conservation of energy and mass theories that energy can be neither destroyed nor created but simply transferred. If we see the spirit as a form of energy then there must be some form of transformation that inhabits the process of birth death and the passage of life.
Working from this basis Goldie has sought to create images that depict his visions of these hidden mysteries, describing moments illuminated by flashes of energy and beauty illustrating his idea of the hidden transformations of energy.

In making these works Andrew Goldie pushes the boundaries of photography through his use of light to create a surreal moment. His images are a reflection of his mind's eye.  This series is about the energy that is ket to us all, which moves through this world unseen, powerful and illuminating moments in time.

For this exhibition, Goldie has utilised stunning coastal locations of the Eastern suburbs and Botany Bay in Sydney. With the help of his team of assistants, cameras, lighting, generators and computers weighing well over 100kg altogether, were hauled across steep cliffs, rock pools and local National Parks to create ultimate images of his imagination.

The resulting works are these enigmatic scenes, hinting at the mesmerising allure of surreal moments, with energies morphing from one form to another gracefully dancing through brief and often unnoticed transformations, creating the hidden link. With lingering and yet haunting beauty, the images are pure and almost supernatural. We may not be given the answer of the universe, but he has certainly captured moments of beauty. This series is comprehensive in its explorations, generating lasting impressions that can be visited over and over.
