Catalogue Essay

All forms of life experience the cycle from beginning to end, birth and death. But what happens after or between such cycles remains an unknown.  Assuming cycles revolve and the energy or spirit is carried from one form to another there remains an area which neither Science or religion can inform us.

Some spiritualities believe in multiple reincarnations.  Science also informs us through the conservation of energy and mass theories that energy can be neither destroyed nor created but simply transferred. If we see the spirit as a form of energy then there must be some form of transformation that inhabits the process of birth death and the passage of life.
Working from this basis Goldie has sought to create images that depict his visions of these hidden mysteries, describing moments illuminated by flashes of energy and beauty illustrating his idea of the hidden transformations of energy.

In making these works Andrew Goldie pushes the boundaries of photography through his use of light to create a surreal moment. His images are a reflection of his mind's eye.  This series is about the energy that is ket to us all, which moves through this world unseen, powerful and illuminating moments in time.

For this exhibition, Goldie has utilised stunning coastal locations of the Eastern suburbs and Botany Bay in Sydney. With the help of his team of assistants, cameras, lighting, generators and computers weighing well over 100kg altogether, were hauled across steep cliffs, rock pools and local National Parks to create ultimate images of his imagination.

The resulting works are these enigmatic scenes, hinting at the mesmerising allure of surreal moments, with energies morphing from one form to another gracefully dancing through brief and often unnoticed transformations, creating the hidden link. With lingering and yet haunting beauty, the images are pure and almost supernatural. We may not be given the answer of the universe, but he has certainly captured moments of beauty. This series is comprehensive in its explorations, generating lasting impressions that can be visited over and over.

Behind the Scenes (Art Studio) Event - Blue Mountain 13/4/2013

Yesterday Rae Bolotin, Artistic Director BIGCI and I hosted our first exclusive behind the scene event specially written for multicultural audiences.

We were joined by current artists-in-residency Chris Dolman (VIC) and Paul Williams (NSW) for an exclusive behind the scene talk about their stay at Wollemi National Park and their new mix media works where painting and sculpture combines.

Followed by a walk-thru with Rae around the construction of their new art space using recycled materials. Rae will share her stories about the concept and challenges with the art space.

Just before lunch we dropped by their neighbour's strawberry farm and picked many delicious strawberries, I know a trick: you'd only pick the little ones (about size of a 20c) that had just turned red - they're the sweetest. :)

Special thanks to the lovely and talented Crisia of Crisia M Photography for these nice photographs!

Chan's Art2Public Travelling Exhibition 2013, why?

With great experience at the Blake Travelling exhibition (58th to 60th seasons), I notice the opportunity that travelling exhibition provided to artists on different levels to get their messages across.

However, it is not easy as many regional galleries had developed their curatorship, so it is time to think about new methods.

Chan's Art2Public Travelling Exhibition 2013 has selected a small group of artists from its sister exhibition, Sculpture on the Greens, selection of artists will come shortly...

Sculpture on the greens tonight!

Sculpture on the Greens, a crazy day 5/4/2013

After the horrible traffic around the Lower North Shore, I arrived Kooindah Waters for this year's Sculpture on the Greens. With the amazing artists, Col & Kris Henry, Ken Smith and many many dedicated volunteers, we had an absolutely amazing Gala evening. My sincere apologies for those who didn't get a ticket, the event was completely sold out days in advance.

Situational

Kath and I met in 2010 when she put together an amazing installation of an escape rope hanging down the facade of an old police station – Gaffa Gallery. Last year she was a Bundanon Artist-in-Residence.
I encountered further large scale works of Kath’s in 2011 when she was working in Newcastle’s Lock Up Museum. When I visited the exhibition of Situational, I was expecting a large scale installation.
Kath managed to surprise me again with a series of small scale works along with photographs and a video, documented time and how time moved. However, difference in scale did not take away the beautiful sensuality that Kath has for the universe, particularly Worlds Within.
Some works, like Insinuate, take after her previous works. I particularly enjoy Spring Scramble and recalled her previous blog post about a kangaroo passing through a fence leaving hair on the fencing wire. I can not help to think, as the Earth move and we spin with it, little things we shredded: hair, finger nails and etc, did they marks of our existence?
Please enjoy Kath’s exhibition, on view now until 17 March 2013. Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Pidcock Street, Camperdown. http://www.kathfries.com
Please also note, The John Fries Memorial Prize 2013 is now open for emerging artists, this is a kind donation by the Fries family in memory of former Viscopy director and honorary treasurer, Kath’s father, John Fries. please visit www.viscopy.org.au for detail.

Transformation, Reviewed by Sandy Edwards

Customs House, Sydney
If you need proof of the power of photography visit Andrew Goldie’s exhibition of stunning lightboxes Transformation on the first floor at Customs House (5 February to 31 March, 2013). If we distill the essential ingredient within photography, it is light. The photographic image is created when light is recorded, whether analogue or digital methods are employed. Photography lends itself to almost any subject matter and approach and is embraced by practitioners with a huge variety of approaches.
Possibly one of the most unusual approaches is Andrew Goldie’s meditation on natural and beyond natural worlds in Transformation. The images are proof that words are meaningless in the presence of a powerful image. Therefore it is hard to talk about them. However I will make an effort as it is important to convey meaning to those who have not seen the exhibition as well as those who have.
All the images appear to be taken at night in isolated rocky outcrops on the edge of the ocean. Water is often present. Some are in bush sites with foliage and trees. Present in every image is a highlighted central object or area that is in fact the subject of the photograph. It is often a pure white glowing sheet taking on a spirit of life. Sometimes it is a pool of water, the crest of white foam on a splashing wave or the presence of a puff of white smoke hovering.
This may sound inscrutable sight unseen however the images persuade by their sheer presence. They assure us there are connections between the tangible and intangible words we inhabit.
Evident in the images is the hand of an assured and experienced photographer who knows how to light in situations that present major challenges. Taking sophisticated lighting into a landscape that involves climbing over rocky formations at night is not an easy matter. Although these works bring to mind the beautiful hand painted bush and seascapes of Peter Solness they stem from a different method and intention. Solness is celebrating the pure beauty of the way things are and reminding us to appreciate that whereas these images clearly link the landscape to the spirit.
Goldie has said “What I have learnt from science and the growing comprehension of the workings of the universe has inspired this work and all my work in general”. Curator Arthur Chan has said “This exhibition interprets the ebb and flow of life and energy in the universe”. Goldie says the work was inspired by fatherhood and the profound experience of witnessing the birth of his son that raised his “wonderment about where do we come from and where does the human spirit go when it leaves this place”.
As a viewer who came away profoundly moved I can vouch that these exquisite moments created from the photographer’s subconscious with the help of a team of committed helpers convince through their technical achievement and their intense and surreal power as images. Highly recommended.

EVENT: Andrew Goldie Exhibition at Customs House

Andrew Goldie's exhibition opening was held at Sydney Customs House was enjoyed by many. Please enjoy some of the photograph on Art2Public's facebook.

EVENT: Andrew Goldie Exhibition at Customs House (part 1)

EVENT: Andrew Goldie Exhibition at Customs House (part 2)
ARTIST STATEMENT

the series "Darker" depicts the idea of a hidden energy that is transformed through birth, life and death and all the processes in the universe.   With this series I wanted to show my visual representation of a an energy that flows from one thing to the next and flashes in and out of existence in the darkness, often without us noticing or paying attention.

Originally from Melbourne, Goldie has worked internationally throughout the world as a fashion and commercial photographer and premiered the first of his solo shows, I’m big in Japan, in 2006. Now residing in Bronte he has been moving his career forward as successful photographic artist and film maker.

In Darker, Goldie explores the ideas of energy, life, death and transformation inspired by art and science with an imaginative, almost supernatural vision. He captures enigmatic scenes, which move from dark moonlit forests to clifftops and lonely corners of an industrialised city.

The subject of this collection is an anthropomorphic white sheet pulsating with light and energy. This scene is described by the artist as being “symbolic of a clean and sterile moment... a brilliant flash of energy or transformation that goes unnoticed”. The viewer is transported into a perplexing circumstance where they are witness to a beautiful yet bizarre metamorphism and are forced to create a narrative.

Why I joined Sculpture on the Greens?

Let me start with a question: do you think art brings people together?

I think YES. Artists are one key to societies moving forward and developing in a balance and sustainable way. Artists imagine and generate ideas that take our communities and culture to different levels.

Let me tell you a secret: once upon a time I was trained to become a sculptor… well, I just couldn’t afford doing metal casting while paying my bills (and robbing a bank is never an option). I found curating/producing equally satisfying, dedicating my energies and I am determined to make things happen. Unfortunately, I found support was difficult to gather from friends and family and the community in general.  ‘Sculpture on the Greens’ is a very well meaning project, a NEW MODEL, with good planning to assist sculptors make things happen and spread the word about them and their art.

With the provision of stipends for all selected finalists, and mentoring programs for young artists, I think this is closest to the direction that I have been looking for.

Posts in May 2013 will also give some details of this great egalitarian exhibition, describing some new and innovative ways that we are breaking down the barriers, leveling the playing field and bring sculpture to our communities.

I am proud to be associated with this project and look forward to the exhibition growing to support sculptors in a way they deserve.

Naoko Yehenara /

I met Dr. Naoko Yehenara, Australian-Japanese-Manchurian artist a few weeks ago, I had never imagine the warm fun-loving woman in red hair is a Cantonese speaker. Suprise to me, she spent quite a few childhood years in HongKong.
Her speciality is porcelain, in which she branched into porcelain painting, sculptural ceramic and Japanese floral design.
She is a great example of a worldly artist. She spent many years overseas, and during that time she had numerous solo exhibitions and her artworks were acquired for private and hotel collections in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, China and Australia. She is also an art educator; she is active in Australia and China.
Yehenara is a wonderful proof that having mixed cultural identity can be a positive element of one’s professional image, for artist or not, being happy for however you are connects you with what you do and
We had a couple of exciting brainstorming sessions and I look forward to bringing our audiences exciting creative projects in 2013.

Pilz Au Yeung /

Copyright: Pilz Au Yeung
Copyright: Pilz Au Yeung
Object artist Pilz Au Yeung was born and raised in Hong Kong, she is an old friend of mine and after years of persuasion, she has finally agreed to be a bit more extroverted about her works.
Pilz’s works are the channels that her inner psyche communicates with others. By turning metal, crystal and acrylic into experimental and wearable objects, she express the deeper side of her or encourage one to think deeply within themselves.
The picture above is of the centrepiece from the series Frozen Moment, she wrote such a beautiful artist statement and I hope my interpretation does its justice: As we all have milestones in our lives, alongside there are plenty of moments that we remember, eventually constitute the person we are today – they’re these frozen moments that supposed to stay with us for the rest of our lives – but as time fly by, new milestone take place, and we change. Chinese often metaphorise time as flowing water: as these frozen moments being dropped into the flowing water of time, how much memories can we truly hold onto?
Pilz will be part of a group exhibition in Sydney in January 2013, look forward to see you Pilz!

Guess where I’m staying in November? /

Guess where I'm staying in November?
Guess where I’m staying in November?
Guess where I’m staying in November?
I love going to wine tastings with friends – you know that old Chinese saying “With true friends…even water can make you drunk”? Well this is real stuff so in order to avoid breaking the law, having somewhere to stay would be a great idea.
This is the Ironbark Cottage at Wollombi Wines, this cottage certainly have the wonderful mix between quirkiness and charm. I know everything tourism brochure would tell me, this place is picturesque (yes); available all year round (yes); and not far from the town centre (yes). But what they forgotten to tell is that, although it is close to town centre, there’s also a sensible distance to provide you with good privacy, and because it is self-contained, you can really have the place to yourself and friends without being disturbed.
My plan is, do all the shopping in advance, stroll up to the cellar door (less than 10 minutes) and taste my favourite White Splash with Allyson and Peter, then roll down the hill to the cottage (within a minute), who’s with me? (You can walk to the cottage)

Andrew Goldie 2 /

© Andrew Goldie

Before I go into the Japan Panorama series, I found this stunning image from artist Andrew Goldie’s website. This image carries a two-folded wonderment about the human mind and human’s place in the universe; the image represented the particular moment where something can mean “either-or”: is she about to throw herself off the cliff, or is she simply trying to appreciate a moment of solitude? Andrew’s work is about the universe and mind and the push and pull of balance – which is something I found very exciting, exhilarating and even inspirational – as human construct our civilisations, we need to be aware that we are still living inside a much larger and unfathomably complex universe.

Andrew once told me there is a “split between the primeval mind and the freshly born consciousness that seeks to control and order so that the primeval mind will not consume us.” When one come across an artwork like this, it is beyond beauty that you can appreciate – it take your mind to a journey and encourage you to think or reflect, and that’s why I like Andrew’s art.

Andrew Goldie /

© Andrew Goldie

Perhaps it is strange to put Andrew’s work in the ‘I Came Across’ group, given I known Andrew for a while.

Not the very first artist I worked with but I’m glad to have Andrew as the first artist featured on my blog. Sydney based photomedia artist Andrew Goldie worked in UK, US, Mexico, and many Western European countries since 2000.

Goldie have been working in both visual art photography and commercial photography, notable clients including Sydney Magazine, Financial Review Magazine, Sunday life Magzine, Sport & Style, Good Weekend and East West Magazine.

I came across an artist statement describing the work above which I really enjoy

“I live on the beach at Bronte so every now and again like this morning I get out there for a sunrise and take a few photos.   I just got a new camera, the Nikon D800e so I’m super keen to get out there and try it out.    This scene is about 30 metres from my front door so it’s not a far stretch but I was up late watching the Tour de france.   Luckily my 10 month old boy is a good alarm.   He always seems to wake up half an hour before sunrise. Perfect timing.” – from passage Bronte, July 2012

In 2006 he lived and exhibited in Japan where he returned in 2012 and commenced his new series Japan Panorama, this new series present the public a remarkable depiction of diversity within the culture, nature and cityscape – I’ll talk about it next week.

‘I came across’ (偶然發現),實際上對已認識多年的Andrew來說,其實不算最適合。

不是我首位合作的藝術家,但我很高興Andrew同意我寫關於他的博客文章。Andrew Goldie自2000年以來,先後在英國,美國,墨西哥,和許多西歐國家工作;作品重視國際性形象。
攝影是Andrew的重點專業,過去他曾為Sydney Magazine, Financial Review Magazine, Sunday life Magzine, Sport & Style, Good Weekend and East West Magazine等媒體合作。

Can they make it happen? /

Hong Kong always have a special place in my heart, not only that was where my family came from, it is also a place where people work so hard, for decades, people in Hong Kong refer their home as a cultural desert, I sincerely hope this would bring some much needed changes.
http://www.wkcda.hk/en/newsroom/press_releases/index_id_112.html
